Fifty year old sleazebag gives up...

..."cash for life" sinecure to "get a little bit of strange"...

OTTAWA — The Senate ethics committee is recommending that disgraced Sen. Don Meredith be expelled for engaging in a sexual relationship with a teenage girl — the first such recommendation in the history of the upper chamber.

The Senate ethics report found Meredith, 52, had sex with the woman once before she turned 18 and twice afterward, and also engaged her in explicit online chats.

Senate ethics officer Lyse Ricard concluded that Meredith, a 52-year-old, married, Pentecostal minister, had begun a relationship with a 16-year-old girl that later became sexual; she also found that Meredith had abused his position as a senator to take advantage of the teen.

UPDATE: Hon. Rev. Dr. Don Meredith
And the ugly picture painted by the excellent report Senate ethics officer Lyse Ricard wrote in March is that for the next two years, Meredith engaged in a calculated effort to both woo her and wear down her doubts. From the moment he met her, Meredith pursued her.

A word, first, about that report. Meredith’s lawyer took the position that the draft version of it went into “an unnecessary level of detail.” By “unnecessary,” it appears the lawyer meant “mortifying.”

LAST WORD: Even if he gets fired....

...you, the Canadian taxpayer, are still on the hook...
Senator Don Meredith will receive a $25,000 annual payout for life even if he is expelled from the Senate. That pension payout relates to his roughly six years of Senate service.
Because, as we all know, MPs and Senators make the law.

old white guy asks.............what is the legal age of consent in Canada? I know the answer, just wondering if anyone else does.

In no way do I condone the senator's behaviour, especially since he is a pastor who should know what infidelity means ... however, as a woman myself, I am always puzzled why the women in such situations are usually cast as the victims. Although she now wants to be shielded by anonymity, "Ms. M" apparently was quite willing to participate in sexting with the senator (see Toronto Star story titled "Don Meredith’s relationship with teenager breached Senate rules, ethics office says"). Here is an excerpt:
"The relationship began in 2013 when Meredith, 48 at the time and a Pentecostal pastor from the GTA, met the young woman at a church event. She was 16. Over a two-year period it progressed from flirtatious chats over Skype and Viber to sexually explicit live videos during which Meredith would masturbate while the woman took off her clothing, to intimate sexual relations that included fondling. They had sexual intercourse before and after the woman, referred to only as “Ms. M,” turned 18."

Could it be that the woman, despite her young age, was able to seduce the senator, thinking he would be able to advance whatever ambitions she had? Does her young age excuse her participation in the affair?

I also wonder why the "progressive" politicians et al. who opposed the Harper government's legislation to raise the age of consent from 14 to 16 are now seemingly so shocked by this case.

I repeat, I in no way condone the senator's behaviour. Maybe I have a simplistic view of the moral angle in this case but I think the expression "It takes two to tango" could apply to this case.

"gabby says... Could it be that the woman, despite her young age, was able to seduce the senator"

well, that's certainly the type of person i'm willing to pay a six figure taxpayer-supplied salary to for the rest of his life.

and he's supposed to be a cleric?

if he was your significant other... would you give him another chance?

I'll never forget Liberal MP's cheering and back slapping each other the day they defeated a motion to raise the age of sexual consent from 14 to 16
It just happened that a married Bill Graham the Foreign Minister was outed as paying to have anal sex with a 15 year old male, should the bill have passed he would have been labelled a pedophile.
Instead he was later made Minister of Defense and as a reward for his service to te party he was named interim leader.
Meredith is no better but you would never see him being appointed Conservative Senate leader.

Probably not to get into my bed again ... but my point was that both the senator AND "Ms. M" are guilty of engaging in an illicit relationship. She knew he was married, yet she went along with the sexting and beyond. She was a willing participant until something changed, what I don't know. Maybe she didn't get whatever financial or career advancement she was hoping for.

ah, but gabby... she was a child. we wouldn't have allowed her to drink, or vote, or own a firearm... but "reverend" don meredith gets to whisk her off to a hotel?

you honestly don't see the issue here?

Neo - I agree with Gabby: that girl was NOT an innocent child. Just because the laws of the land wouldn't have allowed her to drink, or vote, or own a firearm - so what? Those are arbitrary restrictions, and I - as one who grew up when 21 was the age at which EVERYTHING was permitted (except, of course, sex, which was permitted a lot earlier, though seriously frowned upon) - am not impressed with that argument.

The reverend was a louse, but I refuse to think of the young woman as a total innocent either. And when I think of what various Liberal senators have gotten away with, I think the punishment is too severe.

sorry, frances, we'll have to disagree here.

is this really the kind of person who should be giving the laws of the land some sober second thought? who should be milking taxpayers to the tune of six figures until the day he dies?

is there no one in the land who has more integrity than this guy? seriously?

Neo - rather think a troll through the members of both Houses over the years would produce a fair few members who are unworthy of the positions to which they have been either appointed or elected. Would like the man to step down voluntarily. However, there have apparently been worse offenders (a certain senator and a young boy spring to mind).

"frances says... a fair few members who are unworthy of the positions"

well, frances... let's tease that out.

there is absolutely statistically no way the police can apprehend more than a fraction of the potheads and alcoholics who insist on driving 3000 lb rockets through our streets. should we give up on punishing impaired driving?

or, closer to home... reverend don meredith is your financial advisor. when you find out he's been shtupping a 16 year old girl, do you give him a pass and let him continue to manage your retirement nest egg... or do you fire his ass and go with somebody else?

the senate ethics committee, a body that has no doubt seen some egregious misconduct, wants "rev. don" gone. you really wanna die on this particular hill?
