The Lefty Troll-o-sphere

Even the radio waves aren't immune...
Toronto council speaker Sandra Bussin is creating a minor radio-wave tempest after comments she made about conservative politician John Tory on his radio show last Friday.

The caller, identified only as Sandra, said the show's co-hosts were “really messed up on statistics” they were referring to regarding the sick benefits at the centre of this past summer's protracted garbage strike, and that Mr. Miller had gotten “a really good deal for the city.”

Bussin called Friday to defend the mayor and called guest host John Tory a 'three-time loser'.
'Cos that's how they roll.

The Hopi Nation's Tribal Council sent a message Monday to the Sierra Club and a handful of other environmental groups: Stay off the reservation.

This spring, a coalition involving the Sierra Club, Grand Canyon Trust, and several Native American groups called on the Environmental Protection Agency to review the Navajo Generating Station's role in smoggy skies over the Grand Canyon.

They claimed the power plant is a source of "excessive pollution" and should be forced to reduce emissions.

The power plant and Hopi coal mines that fuel it support hundreds of families, providing more than 70 percent of the Indian nation's governmental revenues, said Scott Canty, tribal counsel.

Hospitals were flooded with patients on Tuesday and the death toll rose through the day after presidential guard troops opened fire on 50,000 people at the main football stadium. Some of those at the rally, upset that a military officer who seized power in a December coup might run for president in January elections, had chanted: "We want true democracy."

Then Capt. Moussa "Dadis" Camara's presidential guard opened fire with live ammunition, scattering panicked demonstrators who left scores of dead behind. Opposition politician Mutarr Diallo said he witnessed soldiers raping women with rifle butts. Camara, the coup leader who was not present at the stadium, said the violence was beyond his control.

It was a stark reversal for Mr. Gaya – whom activists once portrayed as a wrongly accused victim of “Islamophobia” – and the latest in a series of admissions from young extremists rounded up by RCMP-led police in June, 2006.

Mr. Gaya, now 21, is likely in line for a sentence nominally in the neighbourhood of 14 years – but could be paroled in a year or two. This is due to the counterintuitive calculus of Canada's correctional system.

The time-consuming pretrial legal battles so far, coupled with Canada's customary two-for-one credit for “dead time” in jail, means most remaining suspects have already served the equivalent of a seven-year penitentiary term.

The documents were filed in response to a motion for costs by Mohamud's lawyer Raoul Boulakia.

S.S. Narcissieff hits an iceberg

My own sense is that he'll make a seriously bad candidate, due to what I'd call his narcissism. This isn't so much about adoring yourself, as being so self-absorbed that your sense of how others react to you goes missing.

He told CBC Radio's Eleanor Wachtel that politics is “the most incredible adventure of all the adventures I've had in my life. … It's been unforgettable no matter how it turns out.”

But for people in the country, how it turns out is what counts; he can save all the savouring for his next memoir.

“What is it that a great politician knows?” he asked Adam Gopnik. “I'm trying to learn that.”

You might expect him to have had a clue before running to be PM, but at least he's asking.

Too many Chiefs...

Horrified chiefs returned many of the bags to Health Canada on Wednesday, calling them an affront toward aboriginal values that say preparing for death is akin to tempting fate.
Does anybody else have a clue what that actually means?

Is it "traditional values" that are driving the horrific rates of drug & alcohol abuse on aboriginal reserves? Are traditional values responsible for totally unacceptable levels of domestic violence?

Murder, suicide, substance abuse, prostitution are all statistically higher than for non-aboriginal peoples.

Somebody please tell me what tradition dictates that so many aboriginals end up dropping out of school... and ending up in prison?
"To send 30 bags to one community is enough to frighten us all," Mr. Evans said. "Not just first nations."

Or are you just lookin' to change the channel on all those polls?

"This is a pandemic-containment measure. The pandemic containment strategy goes from the most minute (hand lotion) to the most extreme (death – containment of infected deceased)."

UPDATE: Yeah, yeah... it's a cultural thing

So now some guy at Health Canada says... no, this wasn't about swine flu... just restocking the supplies at the Rez... but even that's not gonna fly...
In many First Nations cultures, to prepare for death is to invite death. Late yesterday, several chiefs returned over a dozen of the post-mortem kits to Health Canada in symbolic protest.
Are you shittin' me?

Doesn't this also mean that to prepare for sickness (which is what all these aboriginal communities have been screaming there isn't enough of lately)... is to invite sickness?

C'mon now, let's all say it together... because, as as we all know... living on an aboriginal reservation is all about the sanctity of life.

**********

LAST WORD: Taliban Jack... late to the party
NDP Leader Jack Layton pressed ahead, suggesting the government wanted to bury aboriginals rather than come up with a plan to prevent the swine flu from striking them.

“The government is ready to bury the dead of First Nations communities, but is not ready to confront the crisis.”
Oh Jacko... listen to yourself.

President Obama says he will not be there because of the health care debate in Washington. Instead, he is sending Chicago-native, first lady Michelle Obama to Denmark.

Mr. Obama said he is sending - in his words - a "more compelling superstar" to make America's case in Copenhagen.

The first lady offered a preview, talking about the city where she was born and raised. "What makes Chicago such a great host is its people! It is truly the people! Nobody loves sports like the people of Chicago."
That's it? Seriously?

I wonder if he really meant he was sending one of the kids?

From the guy who brought you...

"The McGuinty government ... has an instinct to duck behind any convenient political shield it can find and is willing to put anyone's head on a stick as long as it's not their own," PC Leader Tim Hudak said.

Premier Dalton McGuinty "SAID" his government has increased access to FOI by broadening it to include Hydro One and Ontario Power Generation but did not deny the allegation the expense report was held back.
I know the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT isn't as sexy as hearing about an ex-Conservative MP's substance abuse problem, or some dumbass civil servant sending out body bags to an aboriginal reserve... but ask yourself... in the bigger picture, what's the more important issue here.

Don't let Premier McSlippery and his ilk pull the wool over your eyes... yet again.

Hooking... the victimless crime

-- OTTAWA -- The Crown is asking for 10 years for a prostitute who torched a hallway of the Radisson Hotel when a couple demanded their money back, leaving a woman with horrific injuries.

Melissa White, 26, cried through her sentencing hearing for arson causing bodily harm in connection with the New Year’s Day fire.

She fought tears when asked if she had anything to say. “I’m so fucking sorry,” she wept.
No word yet on whether ACORN will be offering up any assistance.

**********

UPDATE: ACORN apparently getting out...

...of the prostitution racket...
ACORN, calling the actions of some of its employees "indefensible," has suspended advising new clients as part of its service programs and is setting up an independent review to see what happened.

Videos of ACORN workers giving tax advice to people posing as prostitutes and other revelations have led to growing criticism of the organization in recent days.

ACORN has been targeted for years by conservative groups that consider it a sometimes unsavory arm of Democratic electoral politics. The Senate voted earlier this week to deny funding to the organization to help with the next census.

Safe School Week? Seriously?

No... stop... please... yer killin' me.

Gotta confess... I wet myself when I got to the part about having a board sponsored "Group Hug Day...
-- TORONTO -- A fight involving knives and fists outside a high school that left three 17-year-olds injured began after a face-off between rival Asian and black youths, police said yesterday.

Two stabbed students and one who was battered during a fracas Monday on the Brockton Collegiate parking lot behind Bloor Collegiate were released from hospital, Const. Tony Vella said.

The three "are not co-operating" with police, leaving youth bureau detectives without a motive for the battle at the start of this week's Safe School Week.

There have been no arrests.
Not to worry, though... the Toronto School board is wheeling out their big gun... a version of Mr Rogers neighbourhood..
Ward 9 trustee Maria Rodrigues said psychologists and sociologists offered counselling during what she called "a group hug day."

Rodrigues was confident "this was an isolated incident" and the school does not need a full-time cop.

Having a uniformed officer would create "fear and intimidation," since many students are from families who emigrated from countries with dictatorships and distrusted police, she said.
Just one question, here Ms. Rodrigues... what sort of atmosphere does a bloody knife fight create?

Just askin'.

Remember when Count Ignatieff...

...promised to erase the deficit without raising taxes? Well... apparently he's got another trick or two up his sleeve...
Premier Dalton McGuinty says Ignatieff agreed to help Ontario implement the blended tax, which goes into effect July 1, by sending approximately $4 billion to the province.
Well... that oughta brighten up every Canadian taxpayer's day. I guess worrying about actual dollars & cents... is for little people.

The Conservatives have the support of 39 per cent of decided voters, according to the Ipsos Reid survey, commissioned by Canwest News Service and Global National.

Meanwhile, it appears that Ignatieff, who announced this month that his party would no longer support the government, would suffer the most from any backlash.

"It's pretty clear that the guy who's going to wear the government falling is Iggy," said Bricker.

A man's home...

-- BALTIMORE -- Baltimore police say a Johns Hopkins University medical student armed with a samurai sword killed an intruder in his garage.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says campus police and an off-duty city officer responding to a call for a suspicious person heard screams to call police around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Guglielmi says the student told the man he found in his garage to leave and the man accosted him. That’s when Guglielmi says the student defended himself, cutting off the man’s hand and causing a severe laceration to his upper body.

O'Keefe and Giles were garishly dressed as a stereotypical pimp and prostitute. O'Keefe was decked out in excessively snazzy flesh-peddler couture, and Giles, going by the name "Eden," wore almost nothing.

Not ready for primetime

Hon. Bob Rae: Mr. Speaker, I would like to ask the Prime Minister a very simple question. Does the government plan to launch a significant defence of the Canadian system in light of the attack that is being made on it in the United States of America?

Right Hon. Stephen Harper: Mr. Speaker, we intend to let the United States make its own decisions on domestic debates.
I will say that the Canadian health care system will not only survive attacks by right-wing commentators in the United States but will even survive one by left-wing incompetents in Ontario.

Mr. McGuinty unveiled the new measures on Monday morning, an hour before the fall session begins in the legislature. His government is expected to be on the defensive following spending scandals at eHealth Ontario and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.

Mr. McGuinty denied that he is attempting to distract attention from what is expected to be a lively Question Period today. But he also conceded that his government has been caught off guard by the spending scandals uncovered by the Tories.
